What is the Famine?
The World Vision 40 Hour Famine is New Zealand's most popular youth fundraising event. Originating in 1975 in response to the immense famine in Ethiopia, 10,000 New Zealanders united together to raise $265,000. 34 years later it's
become part of New Zealand youth culture with over 120,000 participating each year.
Who does it?
Anyone can do it! If your school, church group, social group, work, family is already doing it then join in with them, or maybe you could get them started? If you’re not part of a group doing the Famine then sign up as an ‘individual’.
What does a Famine participant do?
Participants ask people to sponsor them for doing, or doing without, something they will find difficult for up to 40 hours.
